How to unlink your Elder Scrolls Online account from Steam

Tired of “Please check your internet connection” error whenever the game has problems logging in via Steam?

Are you a Steam user? Does logging in via eso64.exe give you a login error?

Tired of “Connection to server timed out. Please try again later.” error whenever the game has problems logging in via Steam? Want to bypass the Steam check to login to the game?

The solution is simple. Rather than unlink from Steam, you create an additional link to the game to Bethesda.

There’s a catch though. You’ll need to spend money for the base game.

You may also be able to do it at no cost via a support ticket. But I’ve not tried this ticket

Very simply, here’s what to do

NOTE: Before you do the below, make sure logging in via username/password via eso64.exe does not work.

  1. Login to your account at ElderScrollsOnline.com HERE. If you don’t remember your username/password, use the appropriate Forgot links in the page
  2. Buy the Elder Scrolls Online Standard Edition here. It costs US$9.99 when it’s on sale. Yes, you need to spend money, but this is only one-time. No, you won’t lose any Steam purchased expansions. You won’t lose any progress, characters or crown purchases.
  3. After you buy it, the code should be applied to your account automatically.
  4. Login via the standard ESO client eso64.exe using your standard credentials you used to login at (1).

Voila, no Steam required. You can still login via Steam if you wish.

The above method worked for my Steam ESO purchase and my Crowns,  Summerset and Marrowwind purchases carried over.
